Working principle and typical application of oil mist separator
Date: 2025-09-16Read: 36
oil mist separatorIt is a "clean guard" for the mechanical processing, automotive manufacturing, and metal heat treatment industries, specifically used to capture oil mist generated during the processing (such as tiny droplets formed by cutting oil and lubricating oil atomization), prevent oil mist from spreading and polluting the workshop environment, endangering worker health (such as causing respiratory diseases), and equipment corrosion (oil mist adhesion leading to circuit short circuits). Its working principle and typical applications deeply reflect the technical logic of "precise separation".
1、 Working principle:
Its core is to separate oil mist droplets (usually with a diameter of 0.1-10 μ m) from the airflow through physical or mechanical actions. The mainstream technology is divided into three categories:
Centrifugal separation technology: The airflow containing oil mist enters the separator at high speed (accelerated through a snail shell or tangential inlet), and under the action of centrifugal force (usually>3000rpm), the oil mist droplets are thrown towards the inner wall of the separator due to their large mass, and slide down along the wall to the oil collection tank (collected under gravity), while clean air is discharged from the central outlet. The centrifugal oil mist separator has a simple structure (no filter material loss), easy maintenance (only requires regular cleaning of the oil collection tank), and is suitable for scenarios with high oil mist concentration (>50mg/m ³) and large particles (such as ordinary lathe processing).
• Filtration and separation technology: using multi-layer filter materials (such as glass fiber filter paper, stainless steel metal mesh) to intercept oil mist droplets. The coarse filter (with a pore size of 10-50 μ m) first intercepts large oil droplets, while the high-efficiency filter material further captures small liquid droplets. The filter separator has high purification accuracy (outlet oil mist concentration<1mg/m ³), but the filter material needs to be replaced regularly (usually 3-6 months), making it suitable for precision machining (such as CNC machine tools, grinders) with high air quality requirements.
Electrostatic adsorption technology: Oil mist droplets are charged (positive or negative) by a high-voltage electric field (usually 5-10kV), and then adsorbed onto grounded dust collection plates (or oil collection plates) under the action of electric field force. Electrostatic oil mist separators have the characteristics of low resistance (low operating energy consumption) and the ability to handle small particles (<1 μ m), but are sensitive to the composition of oil mist (excessive impurities can easily cause electrode fouling). They are commonly used in precision manufacturing scenarios that are sensitive to static electricity, such as electronic component processing and optical lens grinding.

2、 Typical applications:
Mechanical processing industry: In traditional metal cutting processes such as lathes, milling machines, and drilling machines, centrifugal oil mist separators are standard equipment used to capture the oil mist formed by the atomization of cutting oil (such as mineral oil, emulsions), maintain clean workshop air (oil mist concentration decreases from>100mg/m ³ to<5mg/m ³), and extend the service life of machine tool circuits (to avoid oil mist short circuits).
In the field of precision manufacturing, when CNC machine tools are used to process high-precision parts, a filtered oil mist separator can ensure the air quality in the processing area (removal rate of oil mist particles<1 μ m>99%), preventing small oil droplets from adhering to the surface of the part and affecting the smoothness (such as optical mold processing requiring surface roughness Ra<0.1 μ m).
Special process scenario: In the process of metal heat treatment (such as quenching and tempering), high-temperature oil mist (including oil fume and harmful gases) needs to be pretreated through an electrostatic oil mist separator (removing most of the oil droplets), and then combined with an activated carbon adsorption device to treat residual volatile organic compounds (such as decomposition products of additives in quenching oil), meeting environmental emission requirements (such as the oil fume concentration limit of<2mg/m ³ in the Comprehensive Emission Standards for Air Pollutants).
oil mist separatorThrough precise selection of centrifugation, filtration, or electrostatic technology, a leap from "extensive capture" to "fine separation" has been achieved. It is a key equipment in the fields of mechanical processing, precision manufacturing, and special processes to ensure environmental health and improve production efficiency, providing solid environmental support for green manufacturing.
