Overview of Pneumatic Conveying Systems: Principles, Advantages, and Applications in Modern Industry
Date: 2025-09-10Read: 0

In modern industrial production processes, the transportation of bulk materials such as powders and granules is a crucial step. Traditional mechanical conveying methods, such as belt conveyors, screw conveyors, etc., although widely used, have many limitations. The pneumatic conveying system, as an efficient and clean conveying technology, has become a solution for material handling in many industries.

1、 What is pneumatic conveying?

Pneumatic conveying, as the name suggests, is a physical process that utilizes the kinetic and pressure energy of gas (usually air) to suspend and move solid particles in a closed pipeline, thereby achieving transportation from one point to another. In short, it is like an "exclusive subway system" designed for solid materials, powered by air and guided by pipelines to quickly and accurately deliver materials to their destinations.

Its core working principle is based on fluid mechanics. When air flows at a sufficiently high speed in a pipeline, it generates drag force on material particles. When the force is greater than the particle's own gravity, friction between the particle and the pipe wall, and other resistance, the particle will be carried forward by the airflow, forming a stable gas solid flow.

2、 Key components of the system

A complete pneumatic conveying system typically consists of the following basic components:

Power source (air compressor or fan): The "heart" of the system, responsible for providing the power and air flow required for delivery. Choose different types of fans or air compressors based on the system type (suction or compression).

Feeding device (sending tank, rotary valve, Venturi tube, etc.): the "throat" of the system, responsible for feeding materials into the conveying pipeline in a controllable and uniform manner, and preventing high-pressure gas backflow. This is one of the technically difficult components.

Transport pipeline: The "vascular network" of a system, usually composed of seamless steel pipes or wear-resistant elbows, is responsible for guiding the mixed flow of materials and air to the destination. The design of the pipeline (such as pipe diameter, layout, number of elbows) directly affects the performance of the system.

Separation device (cyclone separator, bag filter, etc.): The "terminal station" of the system, responsible for effectively separating materials from air at the end of transportation. The cyclone separator performs coarse separation, while the bag filter performs fine separation to ensure material recovery rate and purify exhaust gas.

Control system (PLC, sensors, etc.): The "brain" of the system monitors the entire conveying process through pressure sensors, level gauges, etc., automatically controls the start stop and feeding amount of equipment, and achieves intelligent and unmanned operation.

3、 Significant advantages

Compared to mechanical conveying, pneumatic conveying has the following advantages:

Flexible arrangement: Pipelines can be flexibly arranged, making full use of three-dimensional space, bypassing obstacles, long-distance transportation, with low requirements for factory structure, greatly saving space.

Fully enclosed transportation: The entire process is carried out in a sealed pipeline, with no dust leakage, ensuring a clean and hygienic working environment, avoiding material pollution and loss, especially suitable for the transportation of toxic, harmful or expensive materials.

High degree of automation: It is easy to achieve centralized control and automated operation, and can be easily connected to the DCS or PLC system of the entire production line, reducing manual intervention and improving production efficiency.

The maintenance cost is relatively low: the system has fewer active components (mainly concentrated in the power source and feeder), the maintenance workload is small, there are no complex mechanical structures in the pipeline, and there are fewer fault points.

4、 Widely applicable fields

The pneumatic conveying system has penetrated into every corner of the national economy:

Power industry: transportation of fly ash and furnace bottom slag.

Chemical industry: transportation of polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC powder, carbon black, etc.

The food industry requires high hygiene standards for the transportation of flour, sugar, milk powder, starch, and other materials.

Pharmaceutical industry: transportation of raw materials and intermediates.

Building materials industry: transportation of cement, fly ash, and mineral powder.

In short, pneumatic conveying systems play an important role in modern industrial material processing due to their advantages, and are one of the key technologies for improving production efficiency and achieving clean production.
