According to the annual report, in 2015, 246 large and medium-sized cities generated 185.64 million tons of domestic waste, with a disposal capacity of 180.695 million tons and a disposal rate of 97.3%. Among them, Beijing produces a large amount of household waste, with a total output of 7.903 million tons. Next are Shanghai, Chongqing, and Shenzhen. Relatively speaking, in 2014, the amount of domestic waste generated in 244 large and medium-sized cities was 168.161 million tons. Shanghai had the largest amount of urban domestic waste, with a production of 7.427 million tons, followed by Beijing with 7.338 million tons; In 2013, 261 large and medium-sized cities generated 161.488 million tons of household waste. Shanghai had the highest amount of household waste, with 7.36 million tons, followed by Beijing with 6.717 million tons.

Obviously, although there are differences in the number of cities participating in the statistics, the amount of household waste generated has continued to rise in the past three years. Among them, the amount of domestic waste generated in Beijing increased by 1.186 million tons in the past two years.

Xu Haiyun introduced that under the pressure of economic downturn, the prices of consumer goods have decreased, and waste is not worth much, leading to a decrease in demand for waste recycling and an increase in the amount of garbage transported to landfills. Meanwhile, garbage is generated by consumption, and China's per capita consumption is still on the rise. The amount of garbage will continue to increase in the future, making it almost impossible to reduce it.

It has to be mentioned that, corresponding to the increasing amount of garbage generated, in recent years, the market for harmless treatment of garbage in China has experienced the "avoidance effect", and garbage incineration plants and landfills have encountered difficulties in site selection.

Regarding this, Xu Haiyun stated that China has a large urban population and limited land, and the only solution to the problem of garbage disposal is through garbage incineration and power generation. The reasons why the public opposes garbage incineration are quite complex, but garbage incineration is the only way and there is no other method.
