The original OBO surge protector with a horn shaped gap appeared in the late 19th century and was used for overhead transmission lines to prevent lightning strikes from damaging equipment insulation and causing power outages, hence the name "surge protector". In the 1920s, aluminum surge protectors, oxide film surge protectors, and pill surge protectors emerged. Tube surge protectors emerged in the 1930s. Silicon carbide lightning arresters emerged in the 1950s. Metal oxide surge protectors emerged again in the 1970s. Modern surge protectors are not only used to limit overvoltage caused by lightning in power systems, but also to limit overvoltage generated by system operation.
Sudden wave
Surge, also known as surge, is an instantaneous overvoltage that exceeds the normal operating voltage. Essentially, a surge is a violent pulse that occurs in just a few millionths of a second. Possible causes of surges include heavy equipment, short circuits, power switching, or large engines. Products containing surge blocking devices can absorb sudden and massive energy to protect connected equipment from damage.
Lightning arrester
Surge protector, also known as lightning arrester, is an electronic device that provides safety protection for various electronic devices, instruments, and communication lines. When surge currents or voltages suddenly occur in electrical circuits or communication lines due to external interference, surge protectors can conduct shunting in a very short time, thereby avoiding damage to other devices in the circuit caused by surges.

Analyze surge protectors
Lightning disasters are one of the most serious natural disasters, causing countless casualties and property losses worldwide every year. With the widespread application of electronic and microelectronic integrated devices, the damage to systems and equipment caused by lightning overvoltage and lightning electromagnetic pulses is increasing. Therefore, it is very important to solve the problem of lightning protection for buildings and electronic information systems as soon as possible.
With the increasingly strict requirements for lightning protection in related equipment, the installation of Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) has become an important part of modern lightning protection technology to control surges and instantaneous overvoltages on power lines, as well as to discharge overcurrent on power lines.
Characteristics of lightning
Lightning protection includes external lightning protection and internal lightning protection. External lightning protection mainly relies on lightning arresters (lightning rods, lightning nets, lightning strips, lightning wires), lead wires, and grounding devices. Their main function is to ensure that the building is protected from direct lightning strikes, and to release lightning that may hit the building into the ground through lightning rods (strips, nets, wires), lead wires, etc. Internal lightning protection includes measures for lightning induction, line surge, ground potential counterattack, lightning wave invasion, and electromagnetic and electrostatic induction. The basic method is to use equipotential bonding, including direct connection and indirect connection through SPD, to form a conditional equipotential body between the metal body, equipment circuit and the ground, and to discharge the internal facilities induced by lightning strikes and other surges into the ground, thereby protecting the safety of personnel and equipment inside the building.
The characteristics of lightning are that the voltage rises very quickly (within 10 μ s), the peak voltage is high (tens of thousands to millions of volts), the current is large (tens to hundreds of kiloamperes), the maintenance time is short (tens to hundreds of microseconds), the transmission speed is fast (propagating at the speed of light), and the energy is very large. It is one of the most destructive types of surge voltage.
Classification of Surge Protectors
SPD is an indispensable device for lightning protection in electronic equipment. Its function is to limit the instantaneous overvoltage that enters power lines or signal transmission lines within the voltage range that the equipment or system can withstand, or to discharge strong lightning currents into the ground, protecting the protected equipment or system from impact
