About Polycrystalline Mullite Fibers
Date: 2018-08-01Read: 1

With the deepening development of energy-saving technology, investment in energy-saving measures is becoming increasingly important. The materials used for building kilns are also one of the important factors affecting energy conservation, consumption reduction, thermal efficiency, and service life of kilns.

Polycrystalline mullite refractory fiber

PMF (short for PMF) is a new type of ultra lightweight and high-temperature resistant insulation material, which is composed of Mullite microcrystals and integrates the characteristics of crystal materials and fiber materials. It has excellent heat resistance and stability, with a long-term use temperature of up to 1500oC and a melting point of 1840oC. Its thermal conductivity is 1/6 of that of traditional refractory bricks, and its bulk density is only 1/25. It can be widely used for insulation of industrial kiln linings and is an ideal material for energy saving, consumption reduction, and high yield in high-temperature kilns.

The development of polycrystalline mullite fibers in China is one of the key scientific research projects during the "Sixth Five Year Plan" period. Polycrystalline mullite fibers are produced by chemical colloid method and are technology intensive products. It has the characteristics of high thermal resistance and low heat capacity, which can reduce heat loss by 30%. It is used in steel rolling heating furnaces with frequent changes in steel varieties and specifications, and its comprehensive energy saving can reach 5-6%. When used in intermittent electric heating furnaces, its energy-saving effect is more obvious, with an energy-saving rate of about 30%.

The energy-saving effect of polycrystalline mullite fiber in high-temperature furnace windows is better than that of general refractory bricks or high-temperature coatings, and the energy-saving amount is much greater than the heat loss. The reason is not only because it reduces heat loss, but mainly because it strengthens the convective heat transfer of furnace gas to the furnace wall, allowing the furnace wall to obtain more heat, which is then transferred to the material through radiation, thereby improving the heating speed and production capacity of the material.

Therefore, the use of polycrystalline mullite fibers and their products has achieved equally satisfactory energy-saving effects, effectively promoting the lightweighting and technological progress of high-temperature furnaces in China, especially in today's era of high energy value, and making contributions to energy conservation.
