Advantages and disadvantages of ultraviolet disinfection
Date: 2013-11-07Read: 4

HBZhan Content Introduction:UV disinfection equipmentA disinfection device that uses high-intensity ultraviolet sterilization lamps to destroy the internal structures of bacteria and viruses, such as DNA, in order to kill pathogenic microorganisms in water.

Advantages and disadvantages of ultraviolet disinfection

1. The advantages of ultraviolet disinfection

① UV disinfection does not require chemicals and does not produce THMs as disinfection by-products.

② Fast sterilization effect and good efficacy.

③ No odor, no noise, and does not affect the taste of water.

④ Easy to operate, simple to manage, and low in operation and maintenance costs.

2. There are problems

① Ultraviolet disinfection method cannot provide residual disinfection capacity. After the treated water leaves the reactor, some microorganisms killed by ultraviolet radiation will repair damaged DNA molecules under the mechanism of photoreduction, allowing bacteria to regenerate. Therefore, it is necessary to further study the principles and conditions of photoreactivity, and determine the minimum intensity, time, or dose of ultraviolet radiation to avoid photoreactivity.

② The cleaning of the outer wall of the quartz casing is crucial for operation and maintenance. When sewage flows through the ultraviolet sterilizer, many inorganic impurities will precipitate and adhere to the outer wall of the casing. Especially when the organic content in sewage is high, it is easier to form a fouling film, and microorganisms are prone to grow and form biofilms, which can inhibit the transmission of ultraviolet rays and affect the disinfection effect. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt reasonable anti scaling measures and cleaning devices according to different water quality, and develop ultraviolet disinfectors with automatic cleaning function.

③ At present, domestic ultraviolet lamps comply with the national industry standard for straight tube quartz ultraviolet low-pressure mercury disinfection lamps. The maximum power of the lamp is 4W, and the effective life is generally 1000-3000h. The effective operation time of imported low-voltage lamps can reach 8000-12000h, and medium voltage lamps can also reach 5000-6000h. In contrast, the use of domestic lamps will increase maintenance costs. Therefore, the development and production of long-lasting ultraviolet lamps or the direct introduction of UV lamp production technology is an urgent problem to be solved.

④ In the current bidding for ultraviolet disinfection systems in sewage plants in China, some sewage plants have deepened the chromaticity of the discharged sewage due to the introduction of a large amount of industrial sewage. However, the ultraviolet transmittance parameters in the bidding documents still use the values provided by foreign countries, resulting in significant differences from the actual situation of domestic sewage. This has left insurmountable obstacles for the future operation of ultraviolet equipment to meet disinfection requirements.
