Reciprocating pumps are divided into three types based on their reciprocating components: piston pumps, plunger pumps, and diaphragm pumps.

The structure and working principle of reciprocating pumps are mainly composed of pump cylinders, pistons, piston rods, suction valves, and discharge valves.

When the piston moves from left to right, negative pressure is formed in the pump cylinder, and the liquid in the storage tank enters the pump cylinder through the suction valve. When the piston moves from right to left, the liquid in the cylinder is compressed, the pressure increases, and it is discharged through the discharge valve. The piston moves back and forth once, each sucking and discharging liquid once, which is called a working cycle; This type of pump is called a single action pump. If the piston travels back and forth once, each sucking and discharging liquid twice, it is called a double acting pump. The movement of a piston from one end to the other is called a stroke.

The flow rate of a reciprocating pump is not related to the pressure head, but to the size of the pump cylinder, the stroke of the piston, and the number of reciprocating times. The theoretical flow rate of a single action pump is QT=Asn. The actual flow rate of a reciprocating pump is smaller than the theoretical flow rate and decreases with the increase of pressure head, which is caused by leakage. The pressure head of a reciprocating pump is not related to the flow rate and geometric dimensions of the pump, but is determined by factors such as the mechanical strength of the pump and the power of the prime mover.

3、 The installation height and flow regulation of reciprocating pumps do not require liquid injection when starting, as reciprocating pumps have self-priming ability. However, the vacuum suction height also varies with the atmospheric pressure, liquid properties, and temperature in the pump installation area, so the installation height of reciprocating pumps is also limited to some extent. The flow rate of the reciprocating pump cannot be adjusted by the valve on the discharge pipeline, but should be achieved by using a bypass pipe or changing the reciprocating frequency and stroke of the piston. Before starting the reciprocating pump, the valve in the discharge pipeline must be opened. The piston of the reciprocating pump is connected to the prime mover through a connecting rod crankshaft. The prime mover can be an electric motor or a steam engine. Reciprocating pumps are suitable for conveying high-pressure, low flow, and high viscosity liquids, but are not suitable for conveying corrosive liquids. Sometimes it is directly driven by a steam engine to transport flammable and explosive liquids.
