Overview
Plastic product testing and plastic pipe testing are key links to ensure product quality, performance, and safety, and are widely used in fields such as construction, municipal engineering, agriculture, and industry. The following are the core contents of plastic pipe testing, covering common testing items, standards, processes, and precautions:
Product Details

Plastic product testing, plastic pipesTesting is a comprehensive evaluation process aimed at ensuring that pipes meet usage requirements in all aspects. The following is a detailed analysis of plastic pipe testing:

1、 Testing items

  1. Bulk densityBy measuring the mass and volume of the pipe at a certain temperature and pressure, calculate its density and verify whether it meets the specified standards.

  2. Melt Flow Rate (MFR)Measure the viscosity of the pipe melt and evaluate its melt flow performance.

  3. appearanceVisual inspection of the exterior of the pipe to assess its surface condition, color uniformity, etc.

  4. dimensional measurementUse specific tools (such as L-plates, calipers, etc.) to accurately measure parameters such as diameter, length, and wall thickness of pipes.

  5. mechanical propertiesEvaluation of characteristics such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, and elongation at break. The tensile strength test is crucial to ensure that the pipe can withstand sufficient pressure during the drainage process.

  6. impact toughnessTest the impact strength of the pipe using an impact tester and evaluate its performance at low temperatures.

  7. weldabilityTest performance parameters such as weld strength and compatibility with the base material.

  8. hydrostatic testUse a hydraulic pressure testing machine to conduct pressure resistance tests and evaluate the pressure resistance of pipes under different pressures.

  9. thermal stabilityObserve the thermal stability and deformation of pipes in high temperature environments.

  10. Oxygen Transmission RateMeasure the permeability of oxygen in pipe materials and evaluate their airtightness and oxygen barrier properties.

  11. Chemical corrosion resistanceExpose the pipes to different chemicals and evaluate their corrosion resistance. For example, the chloride ion corrosion resistance test involves immersing a pipe sample in salt water containing chloride ions to observe its corrosion condition.

In addition, depending on the specific application scenario of the pipe, other performance tests may be required, such as high temperature resistance test, low temperature resistance test, UV resistance test, etc.

2、 Detection range

The testing range of plastic pipes is wide, covering various types and specifications of pipes, including but not limited to cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipes, heat-resistant polyethylene (PE-RT) pipes, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes, hot and cold water pipes, polypropylene (PP) pipes, aluminum-plastic composite pressure pipes, etc.

3、 Testing standards

Plastic product testing, plastic pipesThe testing follows a series of national and international standards to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the test results. Common standards include:

  • GB/T 1033.1-2008: Plastic Extrusion, Extrusion and Injection Molding Test Samples (Method A2)

  • ASTM D1238: Test Method for Mass Flow Rate and Volume Flow Rate of Plastic Melts

  • GB/T 8807-1988: Appearance inspection rules for rigid plastic products

  • GB/T 6111-2003: General Technical Conditions for Plastic Pipes

  • GB/T 1040-2006: Test Method for Tensile Properties of Plastics

  • ASTM D2794-93: Test Method for Impact Resistance of Plastics

4、 Testing instruments

Plastic product testingPlastic pipe testing requires the use of a series of professional testing instruments to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the testing results. These instruments include but are not limited to:

  • Density meter or pyknometer: used to measure the mass and volume of pipes and calculate their density.

  • Melt flow rate tester: used to measure the melt flow rate of pipes.

  • Diameter gauge: used for online or offline measurement of the outer diameter of pipes to ensure that the size meets standard requirements.

  • Calipers, L-plates, etc.: used for precise measurement of parameters such as diameter, length, and wall thickness of pipes.

  • Tensile testing machine: used to test the tensile properties of pipes.

  • Impact tester: used to test the impact toughness of pipes.

  • Hydrostatic testing machine: used for testing the pressure resistance performance of pipes.

  • Oxygen permeability tester: used to measure the permeability of oxygen in pipe materials.

  • Corrosion resistance test device: used to test the chemical corrosion resistance of pipes.

5、 Sampling and Preparation

For sampling, it should be taken in the area of the product plane and minimum curvature, and there should be no obvious cracks, scratches, or other incompleteness on the surface of the sample. The number of tensile test samples is generally not less than 5 for each group of isotropic materials; Take two sets of samples parallel and perpendicular to the long axis direction of anisotropic materials, with no less than 5 samples taken from each set. If the data dispersion of the 5 sample test results is large, it is necessary to resample and test again.

When preparing the sample, it is necessary to reasonably determine the length of the sample and ensure consistency in the length of the sample in different circumferential directions. At the same time, it is necessary to determine the cutting position reasonably, and the specific cutting position should be determined according to the structural wall type of the pipe.

In summary, plastic pipe testing is a comprehensive and complex process that involves multiple testing items, standards, and instruments. Through strict testing procedures, the quality and safety of pipes can be ensured, providing strong guarantees for applications in various fields.
