Measurement principle of BlueSens microbial fermentation gas analyzer in Germany:

1. CO2 measurement principle

The CO2 sensor consists of an infrared light source, a detector, and a reflection measurement unit. The infrared light source is reflected by a gas filled measuring adapter, and the weakened light of the analyte gas is measured by a detector.

2. O2 measurement principle

① Zirconia principle: When a voltage is applied to a zirconium electrolyte battery, oxygen is pumped from the cathode side to the anode side through the zirconium disk, because the carriers of the current flowing through the zirconium electrolyte are oxygen ions. By connecting a cap with pinholes on the cathode side of the battery and increasing the voltage on the battery, the current shows saturation due to the rate limiting step of oxygen transfer to the cathode, almost proportional to the ambient oxygen concentration.

② Principle of primary battery: Oxygen molecules enter the electrochemical cell through a non porous carbide powder film, diffuse in the acidic electrolyte, and are reduced in the gold electrolyte. The current flowing between the electrodes is proportional to the oxygen concentration in the measured gas mixture. The terminal voltage across the thermistor and resistor is read as a signal, and the change in output voltage represents the change in oxygen concentration.
