1. Advantages and disadvantages of direct startup:
Advantages: requiring fewer components, simple starting method, low cost, and more suitable for low-power motors. The current for direct starting of an electric motor is more than 5 times that of normal operation. In theory, as long as the capacity of the power supply line and transformer that provide power to the electric motor is greater than 5-7 times the capacity of the electric motor, it can be started directly. This requirement is easy to implement for small capacity motors, so the vast majority of small capacity motors are started directly without the need for voltage reduction.
Disadvantages: For large capacity electric motors, on the one hand, the capacity of the power supply lines and transformers is difficult to meet the conditions for direct starting of the motor. On the other hand, the strong starting current impacts the power grid and the motor, affecting the service life of the motor and being detrimental to the power grid.
2. Advantages and disadvantages of soft start:
Advantages: It has little impact on voltage fluctuations in the power grid, minimal impact on the power grid, good motor protection, prolongs motor life, and is more suitable for high-power and heavy-duty motors.
（1）. When the motor is started directly at full voltage, the starting current will reach 4-7 times the rated current. When the capacity of the motor is relatively large, this starting current will cause a sharp drop in the grid voltage, affecting the normal operation of other equipment in the same grid. During soft start, the starting current is generally 2-3 times the rated current, and the voltage fluctuation rate of the power grid is generally within 10%, with very little impact on other equipment.
（2）. The impact of the high current directly starting a super large motor on the power grid is almost similar to that of a three-phase short circuit, often causing power oscillations and destabilizing the power grid. The starting current contains a large number of high-order harmonics, which can cause high-frequency resonance with the parameters of the power grid circuit, resulting in faults such as relay protection misoperation and automatic control failure. The starting current significantly decreases during soft start, and the above effects can be completely eliminated.
（3）. The Joule heating generated by high current repeatedly acts on the outer insulation of the wire, accelerating insulation aging and reducing its lifespan. The mechanical force generated by high current causes the wires to rub against each other, reducing the insulation life. During soft start, the motor terminal voltage can be adjusted from zero, completely avoiding overvoltage damage.

When high current is applied to the stator coils and rotor squirrel cage bars of the motor, the peak current is reduced by about half, and the instantaneous heat generation is only about 1/4 of that of the straight up, greatly extending the insulation life; Soft lifting generates a significant impact force, which can cause clamping looseness, coil deformation, squirrel cage bar breakage, and other malfunctions. During soft start, the impact force is greatly reduced due to the small peak current.
Disadvantages; High investment, high requirements for the usage environment, and low overload capacity of electronic components.
3. Advantages and disadvantages of self coupling voltage reduction startup:
Advantages: Low environmental requirements for use and fewer malfunctions. It is fed to the motor through a self coupling transformer to reduce the voltage, which can be freely adjusted.
Disadvantages: High voltage reduction current, large impact torque, secondary impact current and impact torque during the starting process, unable to start frequently, and poor protection for the motor.
4. Advantages and disadvantages of star delta startup
Advantages: Triangle start is achieved by changing the wiring of the motor to reduce voltage, and the equipment is relatively simple and economical.
