Product Details
Water related coating testing is a series of hygiene, safety, and performance testing activities carried out for protective coatings that come into direct contact with drinking water, aiming to ensure that the coatings do not pollute the water quality when in contact with drinking water and protect human drinking water health. The following is a detailed explanation:
1、 Detecting background and significance
Water related coatings belong to "products related to drinking water hygiene and safety" (referred to as "water related products"), which refer to protective materials that come into contact with drinking water during the production and supply process, such as pipeline coatings, water tank liners, etc. Its core function is to prevent corrosion of metal pipelines and extend the service life of equipment. However, if the coating itself contains harmful substances (such as heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, etc.), they may dissolve or migrate into drinking water, posing a threat to human health. Therefore, the testing of water related coatings is a crucial step in ensuring the safety of drinking water.
2、 Scope and Object of Detection
The water related coating testing covers all protective coatings that come into direct contact with drinking water, including but not limited to:
Epoxy resin coatings: such as amine cured, polyolefin cured, asphalt epoxy resin, solvent-free epoxy resin, etc., widely used in metal pipelines, concrete water tanks and other scenarios.
Other types of coatings, such as polyester coatings (including alkyd resins), acrylic resin coatings, polyurethane coatings, etc., require targeted testing based on specific components and usage scenarios.
3、 Testing items and standards
The testing items are divided into two categories: hygiene and safety testing and performance testing, and are carried out in accordance with national standards such as the "Hygienic and Safety Evaluation Specification for Drinking Water Transmission and Distribution Equipment and Protective Materials" (2001) and the "Drinking Water Inspection Specification" (2001).
1. Health and safety testing
Sensory indicators:
Chromaticity: Check whether the color of the coating meets the standard to avoid water discoloration caused by pigment dissolution.
Turbidity: Evaluate the clarity of water quality after coating dissolution.
Odor and odor: Ensure that the coating has no odor and avoids affecting the taste of the drinking water outlet.
Visible to the naked eye: Check for insoluble substances or impurities in the coating.
Chemical indicators:
Dissolved total solids: detects the total amount of dissolved solids in the coating, reflecting the potential impact of the coating on water quality.
Oxygen consumption: measures the content of organic matter in coatings, which is related to the stability and corrosion resistance of coatings.
Heavy metal testing: including arsenic, cadmium, chromium (hexavalent), aluminum, lead, mercury, etc., to ensure that the heavy metal content in the coating is below the safety limit.
Other substance detection: such as volatile phenols, carbon tetrachloride, formaldehyde, epichlorohydrin, styrene, benzene, etc., to avoid the migration of harmful substances into water.
Toxicological test:
Acute Oral Toxicity Test (LD50): Evaluate the acute toxicity of the coating to the human body.
Cell micronucleus and Ames test: to detect whether the coating has mutagenicity.
Mammalian cell chromosome aberration assay: further validation of the genetic toxicity of the coating.
2. Performance testing
物理性能:
Adhesion: Check the bonding strength between the coating and the substrate to ensure that it does not peel off after long-term use.
Coating impact resistance: Evaluating the ability of coatings to resist external impact and avoid corrosion caused by mechanical damage.
Wear resistance: Test the wear resistance of the coating surface to extend its service life.
Corrosion resistance:
Immersion test: Soak the coating sample in water (usually for 30 days), regularly check for changes in water quality, and evaluate the water resistance and corrosion resistance of the coating.
Acid and alkali resistance test: Simulate acidic or alkaline environments to test the chemical stability of coatings.
Antibacterial performance (if applicable):
Test the antibacterial effect of antibacterial coatings to ensure that they can effectively inhibit microbial growth.
4、 Testing process
Sample preparation:
Paint samples need to be prepared according to standard requirements, such as 40 pieces of 10cm x 10cm double-sided coated glass sheets, or 250ml transparent glass bottle samples.
Immersion test:
Soak the sample in water and conduct full analysis before and after soaking (such as on day 1 and day 30). In the intermediate stage, measure sensory indicators (color, turbidity, odor, visible substances), total dissolved solids, oxygen consumption, etc.
Toxicological test:
Conduct acute oral toxicity tests, cell micronucleus and Ames tests according to standard requirements.
Report issuance:
After the testing is completed, the testing agency issues a formal inspection report with the CMA mark as the core technical document for applying for a health permit.
5、 Significance and Application of Detection
Ensuring the safety of drinking water: By testing, it is ensured that water-based coatings will not cause pollution to water quality and protect human health.
Compliant production and sales: Water related coating manufacturers must pass testing and obtain hygiene permits before producing and selling products.
Improving product quality: The testing process encourages enterprises to optimize formulas and production processes, enhancing product safety and performance.
