The Roots vacuum pump extracts air through two counter rotating rotors. The rotor groove and the inner wall of the pump casing form a closed chamber, and gas is sucked into the chamber as the rotor rotates. When the chamber is connected to the exhaust port, the high-pressure gas recoil causes a sudden increase in pressure inside the chamber, and then the gas is discharged outside the pump. This process does not involve internal compression and requires the assistance of a front-end pump to achieve high vacuum. The design of small gaps between rotors avoids contact wear and reduces lubrication requirements.
