There are various types and complex components of organic matter in industrial wastewater treated by electrocoagulation equipment, and the types of organic matter vary according to different industries. According to their different solubility, they can be divided into soluble organic matter and insoluble organic matter, and according to their biodegradability, they can be further divided into easily biodegradable organic matter and difficult to biodegrade organic matter. The electrocoagulation technology has a good removal effect on high concentration and difficult to biodegrade organic compounds.

Electrocoagulation technology utilizes efficient electrolytic flocculation to generate highly adsorptive and active flocculation groups. It has a good removal effect on insoluble polymer organic matter. At the same time, combining with electric flotation and electro oxidation can further improve its removal rate of organic matter, especially for organic matter that is difficult to biodegrade. Strong oxidation can be used to cut chemical bonds and improve the biodegradability of organic matter. Combined with biochemical treatment methods, the goal of fully degrading COD can be achieved.

The removal rate of COD by electrocoagulation technology generally ranges from 30% to 80% depending on the water quality. The heavy metal ions in general wastewater are mainly chromium, cadmium, nickel, iron, manganese, etc. For the removal of iron and manganese ions, aeration method is generally used to convert them into high valence oxides and hydroxides, which are then transformed from ionic state to insoluble state and precipitated from water, and then removed by filtration.

The electrocoagulation technology generates OH - ions in water during the electrification reaction, which combine with iron and manganese ions to form insoluble precipitates. Combined with sand filtration equipment, it can effectively remove heavy metal ions from water. The removal rate can reach 80% -95%. For the removal of chromium ions, the main focus is on Cr6+in electroplating wastewater. Due to the high toxicity of Cr6+, it needs to be reduced to less toxic Cr3+first, and then neutralized and precipitated with OH - to remove it.

Electroflocculation technology produces divalent Fe2+through electrolysis, which serves as a reducing agent that can fully convert Cr6+in water into low valence Cr3+. Combined with the OH - produced by the reaction, it forms a precipitate material for separation and removal. The removal rate of chromium ions by electrocoagulation technology can reach over 90%.
