A four quadrant energy meter is a type of energy meter that can measure and record the direction of active and reactive power flow in a power system. It achieves comprehensive monitoring of the flow of electrical energy by defining the horizontal axis of a plane coordinate system as active power and the vertical axis as reactive power, dividing the plane into four regions (quadrants).


oneQuadrant: Refers to the active and reactive power delivered by the power grid to users, indicating that users are in a state of electricity consumption. Second quadrant: indicates that the user sends active power back to the grid, but still obtains reactive power from the grid. This situation usually occurs when users have installed renewable energy generation facilities such as photovoltaic power plants, and the amount of electricity generated exceeds the amount of electricity consumed. At this point, users are not only self-sufficient, but also able to supply excess electricity to the grid. However, as the operation of power equipment still requires reactive power, users still need to obtain this portion of electrical energy from the grid.

The third quadrant: indicates that the user sends both active and reactive power back to the grid. This situation usually occurs when users have installed large renewable energy generation facilities, and the amount of electricity generated is much greater than the amount of electricity consumed, while the demand for reactive power from users' electrical equipment is also low. At this point, users not only transmit excess electrical energy to the grid, but also transmit excess reactive power to the grid.

The fourth quadrant: indicates that the user obtains active power from the grid but sends reactive power back to the grid. This situation may be due to the excessive reactive power generated by the user's power equipment during operation (such as overcompensation caused by excessive capacitor input), and this reactive power is transmitted back to the grid.
