The BAM-1020 instrument is produced by the renowned Met One company and has been approved by EPACertification (certification number: EQPM-0798-122) has long been used as an equivalent determination method for PM10 in EPA. In addition, BAM-1020 has obtained EPA equivalent method certification due to its special settings and configuration, and has also obtained PM10 concentration monitoring and recording certification in Commonwealth countries, South Korea, and China.

The BAM-1020 instrument utilizes the beta ray attenuation method to obtain real-time concentration levels of PM10 and PM2.5 particles in the ambient atmosphere. This instrument is widely used for long-term monitoring of particulate matter concentrations in ambient air, such as PM10, PM2.5, TSP (with different sampling and cutting heads available), and can be optionally equipped with BGI cutting heads. This instrument is currently a successful monitoring platform system used around the world.

>Measurement principle:

BAM-1020 mainly uses the beta ray attenuation method to obtain the concentration of particulate matter. There is a 14C beta ray source and a sensitive detector inside the host box. The 14C beta ray source releases high-energy electrons (i.e. beta rays), and the detector is mainly used to detect the number of beta particles. The sampling filter is located between the beta ray source and the detector, and the number of beta particles passing through the filter gradually decreases with increasing particle concentration. The mass concentration of particles on the filter belt and the volume of collected air can be obtained through the formula between beta ray attenuation and particle mass concentration.

>Running process:
The operating cycle of the instrument is one hour. At the beginning of the sampling cycle, beta rays pass through a clean filter band and reach the detector. The initial beta ray value measured by the detector is taken as the zero point value. Then this filter belt mechanically advances to the sampling port. Particulate matter is inhaled through the sampling port and adsorbed onto the filter belt. At the completion stage of the sampling period, the filter strip returns to its initial position and measures the measurement value again after being irradiated with beta rays. The concentration of particulate matter is automatically obtained by using the difference between these two measurements. During each measurement process, the instrument automatically uses a calibration membrane installed inside the instrument for span calibration to ensure the accuracy of the values.
>Data collection:
The collection and acquisition of all data can be achieved using standard RS-232 terminal data transmission interfaces or MicroMet Plusand and Comet software from Met One company. The obtained data includes daily mean, last recorded value, all data, and new recorded data since the last download. Meanwhile, accessory documentation, error logs, and traffic statistics can all be obtained from the data download end.
>Error handling:
Users of BAM-1020 can choose parameter evaluation to perform error checks on data, including flow statistics and error codes, including insufficient power supply, unstable flow, hardware failures, filter belt failures, injection port issues, spool failures, and beta counter failures.
>Maintenance and calibration:
The unique design feature of continuous operation of BAM-1020 makes the instrument generally only require one or two months of maintenance, and the filter belt can be replaced every 60 or 90 days. In addition, BAM-1020 includes comprehensive self checking function, which can prioritize checking the reel transmission function. If the instrument does not run up to standard, an error will be recorded in the memory and marked on the data. Zero point testing is performed using BAM-1020 blank filter strips at the beginning and end of each sampling cycle, and the span calibration criterion automatically inserts a reference membrane for measurement during the measurement process.
